Erectile Dysfunction (ED, also known as impotence), is the inability to achieve an erection and/ or maintain it, thus becoming an impediment to a healthy sex life. ED is also known as ‘impotency’. Penile implants are recommended when the patient is unresponsive to other treatments like medication, oral, injected and topical medication, penile vacuum pumps, hormonal therapy.
Devices are fitted in the penis to facilitate an erection.

Symptoms:

  • Lack of erection.
  • Improper erection.
  • Erection that doesn’t hold for too long.

Diagnosis Tests:

  • Penile nerve function.
  • Lipid profile.
  • Corpus cavernosometry.
  • Duplex ultrasound.
  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA).
  • Dynamic infusion cavernosometry (DICC)
  •  Complete blood count (CBC).
  • Blood glucose (sugar).
  • Penile biothesiometry.

Treatment – Penile Implant Surgery:

  • During surgery, a catheter is inserted through the penis into the bladder to collect the ruine at a single point.
  • An incision is made below the penis head or lower abdomen.
  • A spongy tissue is stretched to normally fill will stretch the spongy tissue in the penis that would normally fill with blood during an erection. This tissue is in the hollow chambers of corpora cavernosa.
  • The urologist will place the chosen penile implant cylinder which customized to the patients exact body measurements.
  • For a two-piece inflatable device, valve and pump are placed inside the scrotum.
  • For a three-piece device, a fluid reservoir is implanted under the wall of the abdomen through an internal incision.
  • After the device is in place, the surgeon will sew to close all the incisions.

Choosing The Right Implant Surgery:

Implant TypeAdvantagesDisadvantages
Three-piece Inflatable Implants

  • Very extensive surgery with malfunction risk of parts. Abdomen reservoir is required.
Two-piece Inflatable Implant
  • Less complicated surgery than 3 piece implant.
  • Facilitates flaccidity after deflation which needs lesser dexterity.
  • Surgery extensive and complicated than semi-rigid implants.
  • Less firm erections than a three- piece implant
Semirigid Rod Implant
  • Easy to implant surgically.
  • Low malfunctioning risk.
  • Less complicated to use for implants with limited manual/ mental dexterity
